Aerosol cleaning
Gentle cleaning of large textiles
Since 2007 there is a aerosol cleaning facility for historicly valuable textiles in Vienna, Schloss Schönbrunn.
The aerosol get sucked through the object at low temperatures by negative pressure. It uses less Water than conventional facilities and is 8 x 5,4m in size. It is perfectly suited for large textiles like tapestries or carpets.

Aerosol cleaning is gentle to fibers
The aerosol cleaning facility is used for a gentle purification of historically valuable textiles. The size of 8m x 5,4m makes it possible to purify large textiles like tapestries.
The cleaning is a continous process where aerosol is sprayed and sucked off. Grime is getting loose and is sucked off downwards. The object is purified homogenously without lateral or transversal grime buildups.
The colors cannot run out
Continous low pressure ensures the fixation of the textile on the fine-meshed stainless steel sieve. Deformation is prevented Water-soluble inks are treated selectively through the vertical penetration with aerosol mist, which practically eliminates the risk of the colors leaking sideways.

Aerosol cleaning process
Before cleaning a tapestry or another large textile in our aerosol cleaning system, we check the suitability of the textile to be cleaned.
If the object is not suitable for gentle cleaning in our aerosol cleaning system, it is cleaned, dry or damp, by hand.
Placing the textile on the system
In our 8×5.4m facility, even very large textiles can be cleaned gently and comparatively quickly.
In the first step, the textile is placed on our system without creases and the remaining area is covered. This prevents the mist from flowing past the textile.
Aerosol treatment of the textile
Fine special nozzles generate fog inside the chamber. This mist has a temperature of around 20-23 degrees Celsius when it hits the textile. The Viennese water in Schönbrunn has a conductivity of approx. 350 microsiemens. The osmosis system delivers pure water with a conductivity of approx. 9.0 – 9.3 microsiemens. Depending on the fabric, water from a decalcifying system (BWT) can be added to set the optimal conductivity for the fabric.
A negative pressure under the textile pulls the fine mist through the textile and the dirt is carefully removed. Due to the very low water consumption of around 30 liters, the fibers remain in their original state and do not swell. The pH of the wastewater is continuously measured and recorded.
The degree of soiling of the textile fabric sometimes requires the use of deionized surfactants. This can be partially applied or briefly mixed with the aerosol and sprayed over the system.
Gentle drying in two steps
The drying begins immediately after the end of the wet cleaning process in order to preserve the colors perfectly. First, two layers of absorbent material (terry cloth) are placed on the cleaned fabric. Plastic foil is placed over it and the negative pressure works for 5 minutes with maximum force – the fabric is almost dry as a result.
Complete drying takes four to six hours with a circulating air temperature of 25 degress Celsius.
Packaging or other restoration work
When it comes to packaging, we make sure that your textile is not damaged during transport. Tapestries are carefully rolled onto a transport roller and packed and returned to the customer.
Our experience has shown the great effectiveness of this type of cleaning. Existing color contrasts can be restored.
You will receive the documentation of the cleaning process with your cleaned textile upon delivery. This includes all the work steps carried out, the previous condition and the cleaning result.
Would you like to have your valuable textiles restored or do you need help with preserving them?
